Former NFL player Meachem facing child support issues

Divorce can be difficult. Though many individuals hope that the proceedings will help close a chapter in their lives, there are often connections that result in divorced individuals having to remain in some semblance of contact with each other. In many cases, having children and owing child support leads to such continued contact.

Unfortunately, this connection could also lead to complications if individuals fall behind on payments. New York readers may be interested in a story involving former professional football player Robert Meachem. He was recently jailed due to falling behind on child support and alimony payments. The payment terms reportedly obligated Meachem to pay $20,000 each month to his ex-wife, with whom he shares custody of their two children.

Meachem apparently fell so far behind that he has accumulated nearly $400,000 in back support. This issue resulted in his being sentenced to 30 days in jail. However, if he is able to provide his ex-wife with $100,000, his sentence could be cut short. The report also mentioned that Meachem claimed to have financial difficulties due to former business associates stealing millions of dollars from him.

As this case indicates, serious repercussions could come about if individuals do not make their required child support payments. However, if a sudden change in financial circumstances has occurred, parties may be able to pursue formal requests for support modifications that could reduce the risk of falling significantly behind on payments. New York residents who are struggling with their support obligations may wish to speak with experienced attorneys who could assist them in determining their legal options.
